Evangelical Discipleship

God’s vision and call for his people are to bless the world

Most recently, the term evangelical has become synonymous with a particular set of political ideologies. However, the word literally means, “to proclaim the good news of the gospel.” The good news of Christ impacts all of life.

After his resurrection Jesus says to his disciples, “As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” And also tells them to “make disciples of all nations and teach them to obey all that I have commanded.” Finally, the Apostle Peter writes that Christians are to “proclaim the excellencies of the one who called you out of darkness and into his marvelous light.”

Rather than seeking to change the world, God’s vision and call for his people are to bless the world through a posture of faithful presence.

A Case Study

The Apostle Peter’s work, life, discipleship, and ministry leadership is central in this discussion. Through his sanctification and maturity, Peter moved from the emotionally unhealthy disciple to the Apostle who commended the Church of Asia Minor to live in a posture of faithful presence in a toxic environment where they possessed little political agency.
