Most discipleship programs address one or two dimensions of a person's life. Faithful Presence addresses seven, because the people engaging in public square conversations and work carry the full weight of that calling into every dimension of who they are. The S.E.R.V.I.C.E. framework was built for that reality.
What is S.E.R.V.I.C.E.?
Seven dimensions. Four questions. One framework. One mission.
S.E.R.V.I.C.E. stands for Spiritual, Emotional, Relational, Vocational, Ideological, Cultural, and Evangelical formation. It is the seven-facet framework at the heart of everything Faithful Presence does.
The acronym wasn’t contrived, it was clarified. And it spells the point: we are formed for service, not conquest. That conviction comes directly from Jesus, who told his followers in Mark 10 that greatness in the kingdom looks like becoming a servant of all.
The Seven Facets form the whole person. The Four Questions direct the whole mission. Together, they are not two frameworks — they are one integrated model: the method that is the mission.

S — Spiritual Formation
All formation begins here.
Spiritual discipleship is the foundation of everything else. It is an ongoing, intentional process of Christian formation, becoming not just the person you hope to be, but the person God created you to be. For servants and leaders in Washington, it begins with one invitation: Follow me.
E — Emotional Formation
The most overlooked dimension of leadership.
The drive to public service can be quietly hijacked by emotional wounds that were never addressed. Emotional discipleship takes Scripture seriously as a resource for mental and emotional health, following the example of Peter himself, who grew from an emotionally reactive disciple into a pastor of measured, faithful care.
R — Relational Formation
Washington runs on relationships. So does the kingdom.
Washington is a city built on relationships used as currency. Relational discipleship offers a better way: biblical conflict resolution, navigating power differentials with humility, and loving your neighbor even when your neighbor disagrees with everything you stand for.
V — Vocational Formation
Work is not a curse. It is how we participate in God's mission.
"Vocation is integral, not incidental to the mission of God." -Stephen Garber. Vocational formation helps servants and leaders understand what it means to work heartily, as for the Lord, offering foretastes of the coming kingdom.
I — Intellectual Formation
Everyone in Washington is being ideologically formed. The question is by what.
The public square is a key place where ideologies come to battle. But ideological thinking is very different from intellectual thinking. Ideological thinking is typically partisan and not open to intellectual challenge. Public square concerns, such as proper administration (Greek: oikonomia), which is integral to the pursuit of happiness/blessedness, and true flourishing (Hebrew: shalom), are ideas that require deep consideration by servants and leaders in the public square. Thankfully, there is a rich Christian tradition and literature on political philosophy, subsidiarity, economic theory (shareholder vs. stakeholder capitalism, markets, and trade), social justice and mercy, statecraft, sphere sovereignty, creation care, racial and gender issues, and foreign policy. To be clear, this is not an ivory tower or academic pursuit; it is meant to provide the foundation for a robust Christian faith in thoughtful action. Intellectual discipleship is necessary for properly asking, answering, and applying the four questions of Faithful Presence: what is good that requires encouragement, what is broken that longs for restoration, what is missing that awaits creation, and what is evil that demands opposition. Further, it creates an assessment paradigm for the proper categories of each question and then directs the development of new positions, policies, and legislation.
C — Cultural Formation
Christians are called to bring light, not add to the noise.
Cultural formation helps disciples understand the world they're actually living in, and engage it as people called to cultivate what is good, create what is missing, repair what is broken, and oppose what is evil.
E — Evangelical Formation
The word means what God says it means.
Evangelical has become synonymous with a political identity. But the word — euangelion — simply means to proclaim the good news. Evangelical formation reclaims that original meaning: a life that blesses the world through faithful presence, offering foretastes of the coming kingdom.
